Broadway Market Plaza

We started this project with the goal to create an engaging outdoor space that is accessible, controllable, and aesthetically connected to the surrounding urban fabric. The design introduces a reactivated plaza with both covered and uncovered seating punctuated by plantings to encourage market goers to spill out into the plaza and enjoy the neighborhood. Necessary site upgrades for better accessibility were made while also providing spaces and amenities for community events and local festivals. The surrounding steel enclosure ensures security at night, while allowing for interaction and exploration during the day.

During the design process, our team worked closely with Floura Teeter Landscape Architects, the Broadway Market Merchants, the Fells Point Main Street Organization, and the Fells Point Residents Association. This collaboration ensured everyone was heard and the design embodied the goal of the Client – to honor the past while preparing for the future. We shepherded the proposed design through neighborhood meetings and a lengthy CHAP review process. As residents of the City, we were excited by the opportunity to enhance this public space and turn a neighborhood eyesore into a neighborhood asset.
